Marlene grew up in Austria and moved to Berlin to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Communication Science at the Freie Universität, with a minor in History. During her undergraduate years she became more critical of the national and Eurocentric perspective of her school education. She chose the Global History program to expand her range of knowledge to other countries and areas outside of Europe. Her main research interest is Environmental History during the Early Modern Period and the 19^th century.
