Joel received his BA in History and Politics from Oxford University, where he wrote his thesis about the development of London's gay club scene in the 1970s, and the effect this had upon the formation of queer identities. In addition to the history of sexuality, Joel is interested in other forms of identity, such as ethnicity, race, nation, and class, and the way in which these were shaped by colonialism.
