Marta Podvolotskaya

Hello everyone, my name is Marta. I was born in Russia but immigrated to Canada when I was 19 years old. Prior to leaving Russia I studied linguistics for four years at a university in St. Petersburg, but in Canada I somehow ended up with a six-year long career in a corporation. When I reached the moment of disenchantment with my work-home life, I realized that my deep curiosity in everything that had to do with the "how did we get here" type of question needed to be finally unleashed in an academic setting. I enrolled in a BA History program at Dalhousie University from which I graduated a month ago. During my studies I took up German as well, which led me to language courses at both FU and HU; it was then when I realized that Berlin is a great city with its smart public spaces, activism, culture, etc. When I found out about the Global History program, I knew it was calling my name. So here I am now.

I'm interested in learning and reading/writing about authoritarianism, nationalism, conflict, and sometimes anarchism, among other things. In terms of a geographic region my area is southeast Europe.

In my free time I enjoy bouldering, hiking, and taking part in book clubs. Have a great day!
