German Identity, Intermarriage and Divorce in Colonial Samoa (1900-1914)
Dr Hütten's book 'German Identity, Intermarriage and Divorce in Colonial Samoa (1900-1914)' examines how German colonial governance in Samoa (1900–1914) used legal frameworks surrounding marriage and divorce to construct and assert a specific notion of German identity (Deutschtum). The study reveals how personal relationships became a battleground for defining legal and cultural boundaries between colonizer and colonized, and how German legal identity was projected, contested, and sometimes contradicted in the daily realities of colonial Samoa.
