Since the MA Global History is a joint degree of the Freie Universität and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, students of the program are required to partake in seminars and lectures at both universities. As many students participating in the program will have completed their respective undergraduate degrees at different institutions, this section aims to provide some basic information about the history and orientation of both the FU and the HU. Despite various differences in these areas both universities are committed to preeminent academic research and primeness in teaching. This long-standing commitment has earned both institutions the status of excellency awarded by the German Universities Excellence Initiative, which shows Berlin's two biggest universities are among the only 11 teaching institutions in the country to be honored with this distinction.
Currently, over 50,000 students attend the HU and FU. They have hosted notable alumni, honorary members, and former professors like Max Planck, Lise Meitner, W.E.B. DuBois, Erwin Schrödinger, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Arthur Schopenhauer, Herta Müller, Leopold von Ranke, Jonathan Franzen, Michelle Bachelet, Kenzaburō Ōe, John F. Kennedy, Homi K. Bhaba, Albert Einstein, Friedrich Engels, and Kofi Annan amongst many others.
